Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has added two new SurfLight™ high-speed infrared (IR) emitting diodes to its product portfolio. The IR LEDs come in compact 3.2 mm by 1.6 mm by 1.1 mm surface-mount, top-view packages. Vishay based the 850 nmVSMY12850 and 940 nm VSMY12940 on the company’s GaAIAs surface emitter chip technology.
According to Vishay, the technology enables the IR LEDs to combine fast switching times with high radiant intensity and optical power. The IR emitters feature clear, untinted PCB-based packages with inner lenses for surface mounting. Vishay contends that the emitters offer lower profiles than those with dome lenses or PLCC-2 packages, allowing the VSMY12850 and VSMY12940 to provide powerful IR illumination in space- constrained end products.
When used with Vishay’s VCNL sensor family, Vishay says that it optimized the emitters for proximity and gesture applications, optical switches, wake-up functions, and photointerruptors. The company says that IR emitters are also ideal for 3D gaming units and IR touch panels.
The VSMY12850 and VSMY12940 offer very high radiant intensity to 16 mW/sr at a low 70 mA driving current with fast switching times of 10 ns. They operate with a forward voltage of 1.6 V. The can reportedly also run at high pulse current operation up to 1A at 100 µs. The emitters feature a ± 40° angle of half intensity and can operate over a temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C.
The IR emitters offer a moisture sensitivity level (MSL) of 3 in accordance with J-STD-020 for a shelf life of 168 hours. The devices are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free. The company has samples and production quantities of the VSMY12850 and VSMY12940 available now, with eight to 10-week lead times for large orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery starts at $17.00 per 100 pieces.
