Samsung Electronics intends to introduce large Micro LED TVs during the second half of 2018, according to a DigiTimes article, which cited sources in Taiwan’s TV supply train. The new Micro LED TV launch is Samsung’s attempt to counter the reduced shipments from its LCD TV business unit that posted 10% lower overall shipments in 2017 compared to 2016.
In the high-end TV market (above US $2,500), Samsung’s focus on QLED TVs enabled the company to take the third position. The company was still only able to account for 18.5 percent this high-end TV segment.
The company has also shifted its focus to TV’s above 50 inches diagonally. In the high-end TV segment Samsung’s will compete against OLED TVs which surged in sales in 2017.
