The trade journal “Automotive News” selected the Osram Oslon Black Flat family of automotive multi-chip LEDs as a winner of the PACE Awards. The multi-chip LEDs for front headlamps boast more light output from a compact package than any comparable product.
The win marks the third time Osram Opto Semiconductors won the award in the “product” category for new product innovation. The award goes to new products that are “game changers” in the automotive in terms of their innovation and market impact. In 2006, Osram’s Color-on-Demand conversion LED won. Then, Osram’s Ostar Headlamp family won the award in 2011.
“They enable us to generate entirely new headlamp solutions in collaboration with our partners in the headlamp and automotive industries,” commented Peter Knittl, Director Automotive LED at Osram Opto Semiconductors.
At the PACE Awards Ceremony in Detroit on April 20, 2015, Mike Godwin, Osram Opto Semiconductor’s North American director of LED products, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
Osram Oslon Black Flat LEDs are based on the company’s UX:3 chip technology, which enables very high luminous flux even at high currents from a comparatively smaller package. The smaller package enables compact headlamp designs. The LED’s surface mount technology (SMT) allows easy mounting on a printed circuit board and processing with standard soldering procedures. This soldering capability enables the LED’s integration into a simple, standardized process. The black QFN package (Quad Flat No-Lead) expands like the circuit board during cyclic temperature loads, resulting in soldered joints that are significantly stronger and exposed to much less strain.
For over 20 years, the US journal “Automotive News” has been giving PACE Awards in recognition of technological advancements, superior innovations, and outstanding achievements in the automotive sector. The annual award ceremony is held in April in Detroit, USA.
An award jury comprised of experts from the fields of science, economics, and industry evaluates innovations based on criteria such as originality and market acceptance. The list of all 2015 winners and more information about the PACE Awards is available on the website.
