Osram Debuts Eviyos Prototype Hybrid LED Chip with 1024 Individually Controllable Pixels for Automotive Headlights

Osram Opto Semiconductors has developed the Eviyos prototype hybrid LED. The hybrid prototype combines a light emitting chip and individual pixel control electronics. According to the company, the prototype is the first ever hybrid LED and it embodies major progress toward the first market-ready smart controllable high-resolution LED. Once oncoming traffic is detected, the proper pixels are automatically switched off, so oncoming vehicle drivers are not dazzled.

The prototype, integrated into a demonstrator from Osram Specialty Lighting, will debut at ISAL from September 25 through 27, 2017 in Darmstadt. The company based the Eviyos prototype on the µAFS research project, which it completed in the fall of 2016. The project employed several industrial sector partners with coordination from Osram Opto Semiconductors.

Minimum of 3lm per Pixel of Eviyos at 11mA

This LED with pixel control electronics integrates 1,024 pixels of Eviyos and the driver in a footprint of about 4 mm x 4 mm.
The light source delivers a minimum luminous flux per pixel of 3 lm at 11 mA. The company says that initial prototypes have already demonstrated more than 4.6 lm per pixel.

Osram Opto Semiconductors says that customers can change the number of hybrid LEDs in their applications and can also supplement them with conventional LEDs, depending on the particular demands of the application. The company claims that Eviyos illuminates surroundings in high-beam quality light and ensures that direct glare or even reflected glare from road signs and other reflective surfaces does not dazzle other road users and drivers themselves.

“The hybrid LED is another example of our products making a major contribution to improving the quality of life in many different areas. With Eviyos we are helping to make the roads safer and improve comfort and convenience for drivers. We are proud that we can present the first prototype so soon after completing the research project. We are now another stage further toward series production,” said Thomas Christl, Marketing Manager at Osram Opto Semiconductors.

Eviyos lets users precisely control and dim the individual pixels. At any time, the only the necessary pixels light up. The company intends to launch Eviyos at the start of 2020 as the beginning of a separate product family. The company points out that smart headlights are just one potential application for using intelligent selective pixel control.
