Taiwan-based firm Macroblock announced its latest highly integrated drive IC- MBI5359 at the 2017 Macroclock LED display China Seminar. According to Macroblock, the MBI5359 is the first driver IC that can be used for both ultra fine-pitch and micro-LED displays. The company says that adopting MBI5359 can enable LED display producers to manufacturer 0.6 mm pitch LED displays and breakthrough current technical limitations and bottlenecks.
Macroblock notes that indoor fine-pitch LED display adoption grew steadily since 2012, and the pixel pitch of standard product changed from P3.0 mm to P1.25 mm quickly. However, Macroblock points out that the mass production of a P1.0 LED display is still a challenge for all manufacturers.
The MBI5359 features high integration, which combines driver IC and MOSFETs into one package, and one driver IC controls 512 pixels. A P0.9 module for example, has more space for PCB layout from using MBI5359 (Fig. 1). Also, a modular layout to simplify PCB design (Fig. 3) helps heat dissipation and reduces PCB layout mistakes. Most importantly, this design will accelerate product launch timeline.
Early mass production of ultra fine-pitch (P<1.0) LED displays, couldn’t avoid low reliability. Therefore, the MBI5359 offers LED failure prediction and dead pixel isolation. The failure prediction allows manufacturers to repair or replace pixels with high-risk of failure before shipment to reduce customer complaints after installation. Dead pixel isolation can decrease a dead pixel’s influence on visual performance (such as cross or caterpillar patterning).
Also, Macroblock says that the MBI5359 can provide better image quality. MBI5359 can achieve the “True 16-bit” visual performance that is difficult for fine pitch LED displays and enrich the greyscale levels of display images.
Unlike other PWM solutions, the company says that MBI5359 equips with the “high refresh rate at low gray scale levels” (Fig. 6) that makes display images more stable without flickers compared to other manufacturer’s driver IC solutions.
