Lumileds Introduces the Luxeon CZ Line of LEDs for Narrow Beam Color Mixing Applications

Lumileds has introduced the Luxeon CZ Color Line, a product line optimized to deliver maximum punch (high output across a narrow beam). The company developed the Luxeon CZ Color line to meet the recent market trend of color tunable luminaires with narrow beam angles and maximum output.

“The Luxeon CZ features up to 48% higher punch than any other undomed color LED,” said Jennifer Holland, Product Line Director of the Luxeon CZ Color Family.

The CZ Color Line consists of 21 LED color options including 13 color (wavelengths) and 8 white LEDs. The color options include Red, Red Orange, Amber, PC Amber, Mint, Green, Cyan, Blue, and Royal Blue. In addition to its extremely high output color, the Luxeon CZ Line enables narrow beam angle fixture designs. The LEDs emit minimal light below the horizontal plane. Therefore, the optics can take in and direct all of the light. “It is easier for optics to pick up all the light because the emitters cast minimal light below the horizon, unlike comparative products on the market,” said Holland.

Lumiled CZ LEDs Eliminate Crosstalk

The product line eliminates crosstalk, which happens when the color and white LEDs are packed close together, and emission from a colored LED excites the phosphor of a white LED. This excitation causes the white LED to appear like it is on when it is not, resulting in color mixing that produces output with an unintended color point. The company claims that in a narrow beam system, the intensity of the light from Luxeon CZ is nearly 30-50% higher compared to other undomed LEDs. The intensity of each color is similar, ensuring a consistent beam width and minimizing halos when color mixing.

According to Lumileds, the Luxeon CZ ensures a true color point in compact designs. The LED line is especially suited for use in dimmable lamps and fixtures and emergency vehicle lighting applications as well as architectural lighting, and entertainment lighting applications.

Another feature of the design that simplifies color mixing and the use of external optics is the identical focal length of each CZ LED. Furthermore, the Luxeon CZ and Luxeon C have the same footprint and are both hot-tested at 85°C to ensure excellent performance at real-world conditions

Additionally, the LEDs boast an extremely low thermal resistance of (3.2°C/W), which helps reduce the size of heat sinks for even the most compact lamps or luminaires. A low thermal resistance is especially advantageous in densely packed applications because it helps considerably with thermal management. The company notes that the design of the CZ offers the features and reliability of the Luxeon C, and gives lighting makers the flexibility to use them individually or even together.
