Compound Semiconductors Online - Company News Releases
May 20, 2008... Irvine, California USA -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading manufacturer of high performance analog mixed signal integrated circuits and high reliability semiconductors, and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), a major global manufacturer of LCD TV display panels, have partnered in the design of an advanced TV backlit with RGB (red/green/blue) LEDs. This system will be on display at the 2008 Society for Information Display Conference in Los Angeles, May 20-22.
CMO has designed a high performance large screen TV utilizing advanced LED drivers based on Microsemi's Digital Advanced Zone Lighting(tm) technology. This TV supports the scanning backlight mode for backlight LEDs (1-D) and the more sophisticated zone dimming mode (2-D) as well. The scanning backlight mode significantly reduces motion blur phenomena. The zone dimming mode, in addition to reducing motion blur, offers substantial enhancement of the contrast ratio and also provides vastly reduced power consumption.
Microsemi's advanced lighting technology, DAZL!(tm), includes a family of LED drivers both for high and low power LEDs. These drivers, designed in a high voltage mixed signal technology, greatly reduce the number of external components needed to build an LED backlight system, while offering advanced capabilities such as zone dimming. They can be used with either RGB or white LEDs.
"We have been pleased to cooperate with CMO in their advanced TV design," said Steve Litchfield, Microsemi Executive Vice President and President of the Analog Mixed Signal Group. "As a leading supplier of LCD panels for high performance LCD TVs, CMO is driving the performance and power consumptions aspects of LCD panels. Microsemi is proud to offer its advanced backlighting technology to enable the superior performance of CMO LCD Panels and TVs."
"Partnering with Microsemi has enabled us to offer leading edge LCD panels for advanced TV systems," said Chung-Kuang Wei, Chi Mei Optoelectronics Associate Vice President of Technology Development Head Division. "Microsemi's high performance DAZL! Drivers helped us boost the performance and greatly reduce our time to market, while enhancing our product reliability through reduced component count."
The CMO high performance large screen LED TV system, HyperChameleon(tm) technology, is on display in Booth 619 at the SID Conference.
