Bristol Motor Speedway will soon get the world’s largest outdoor, permanent, center-hung digital display. The screen, fittingly named “Colossus,” is comprised of 8,694 square-feet of digiLED Toura 6mm LED panels from GoVision. Bristol Motor Speedway will debut the display later this month.
Argyle, Texas-based GoVision has been there from the initial design and engineering to proof of concept. Once in place, GoVision will manage, market, operate and maintain the display in a partnership modeled after the company’s long-standing relationship with the Dallas Cowboys.
As with the screens outside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, GoVision will be able to rent out the LED panels that make up Colossus when the Speedway is not using them. The panels will add to GoVision’s inventory of Toura 6mm tiles, the largest rental inventory of LED panels in the industry.
“This is truly a one-of-a-kind, first-of-its-kind installation and I’m proud that our organization is the one with the capabilities to pull it off,” said Chris Curtis, CEO, and founder of GoVision, L.P., one of the nation’s premier suppliers of large-scale LED video displays and related services. “We worked closely with BMS and Panasonic to create a win-win partnership that includes both a huge permanent installation at the Speedway and the availability of a substantial new amount of cutting-edge 6mm panels for rent.”
Jerry Caldwell, executive vice president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway, shared his excitement for the giant new screen at a special reveal ceremony. “Combine all the energy and excitement of Bristol with the ultimate home theater system, and you’ve got Colossus,” he said. “The size, resolution and sound of this display will draw our guests into every bit of action on the track and in the infield.”
Each of the four custom-built screens measures about 30’ tall by 63’ wide. In total, the system is comprised of nearly 54 million LEDs that make up 18 million pixels. digiLED custom designed the Toura 6 product to meet GoVision, Panasonic and BMS specifications. The Toura 6 tiles have a 6mm pixel pitch, and they boast a tighter grouping of pixels than any other large-scale, permanent outdoor display. The tiles can create 281 trillion different colors with a resolution that is 25 percent sharper and brightness that is 23 times brighter than the typical home HD TV.
The display will hang from a halo-shaped truss. The centerhung display also features a circular LED display beneath the screens measuring almost 6-feet in height. Combined, the screens and the LED ring provide more than 10,500 square feet of high-resolution, active viewing area.
